Towards an Understanding of the Tropical Marine Environment

WHAT WE DO

CRRF does original research to acquire the knowledge needed to understand and make intelligent decisions related to conservation, climate change and resource management.

Based in the Republic of Palau, surrounded by diverse reefs of the western Pacific, CRRF has a waterfront marine research facility with lab space, accommodation and three research boats.

Our research programs are oriented towards 1) the dynamics of the marine environment as they relate to conservation decisions, 2) limits of species diversity, community distribution and biogeography, and 3) monitoring with respect to short to long-term environmental and climate changes.

WHO WE ARE

CRRF was started in 1991 by a group of marine scientists dedicated to research and education on coral reefs and other tropical marine environments. CRRF is both a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in the U.S. and a chartered Palauan non-profit organization. It has specialized in high quality environmental research in Palau and other geographic areas over the past 25 years.

We have eight full time staff based in Palau and work with visiting scientists conducting research in Palau, along with our many long-time scientific collaborators.

Together we have the specialist knowledge on coral reefs and all aspects of marine environments. We study the tiniest to largest marine organisms, survey from heights of 2000 ft to depths of 1000 ft, and are involved in pure biology and ecology to enhance public awareness and management recommendations.

Some of the research we have been conducting is summarized in this web site with details about our programs. We have an online data archive that hosts easily accessible information on water temperatures of Palau, a marine invertebrate and algae specimen database and, in the future, a rock island weather data archive for Palau (a work in progress).
